If you search the Yahoo groups site for "author" 
http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=author
you'll get a listing of over 7000 news groups, in order by number of 
subscribers. At the high end, subscribers number over 10,000. Granted, many 
of these are not "literary" authors -- the list includes authors of text 
books, fan-fiction etc. Still, a possible place to start browsing.
