When I first read your original question, my immediate reaction was "Freemasons". But it would seem incongruous in a US Methodist context!  You could follow that up, though.

But really I don't think it's a "ritual", as such.  It just sounds like a friendship game.  Try sources on that kind of thing. 

Ultimately I think your best option is to go back and ask at the church.
