Does this help? The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. (2000) gives these definitions:

NOUN:	1. often Southron A person who lives in the south, especially an Englishman as called by a Scotsman. 2. A native or inhabitant of the American South. Used by the Confederates in the Civil War.
ADJECTIVE:	Scots Southern.
ETYMOLOGY:	Middle English, variant of southerne, southern. See southern.

After looking at this a little further, the blurb on the back cover of the paperback edition I cited before starts out "The United States never recovered from the War for Southern Independence."

So, this edition has it spelled both ways, although in the actual text, it says Southron.

The first sentence of the third paragraph of the first page in the paperback version published by [Del Rey] Ballentine Books, New York, 1997 (c. 1953, 1981) reads as follows:

"Grandpa Hodgins, after whom I was named, perhaps a little grandiloquently, Hodgins McCormick Backmaker, had been a veteran of the War of Southron Independence."

"Michael J. Lowrey" <orangemike at gmail.com> wrote: Does anybody have handy a copy of Ward Moore's novel BRING THE
JUBILEE? If so, could you check to see whether the American Civil War
is referred to in that book's universe as "The War for Southron
Independence" or "The War for Southern Independence"? Ideally, with a
page cite to the hardcover (or at least the paperback)?I do not have the book in hard copy, but there is an online excerpt on Amazon.co.uk (though not on the American site, for some reason). In the third paragraph on the first page, the narrator says that his grandfather, for whom he was named, was "a veteran of the War of Southron Independence".

This is a 2001 British edition of the book, so I suppose it's possible that there was a change in wording.
