Congratulations - I've not contributed to this long and hard work but
I've watched everyone on the list who did and it was an amazing group
effort.

Subject: [PW] Yale Book of Quotations Published

I am pleased to announce that The Yale Book of Quotations has finally
been
published by Yale University Press. A good discussion of the book can
be
found here:

http://www.yalealumnimagazine.com/issues/current/quotations.html

My initial conception of this book was to create a quotation dictionary
better than Bartlett's or the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. As I
worked on it, I realized, to my great surprise, that it was possible to
create a quotation dictionary much more comprehensive and accurate than
those two standard volumes, and that became my aspiration. I leave it
to
others to judge whether I succeeded in that aspiration.

If I did succeed, a lot of credit goes to the participants in Stumpers,
now Project Wombat. I posted hundreds and hundreds of queries and
received excellent help with the great majority of them. Thanks to all
the wombats for their patience with a type of posting that could have
been
considered inappropriate for the list. Wikipedia is often held up as
the
outstanding example of an Internet-based collaborative research project.

Wrong. Stumpers and its role in this book was the outstanding example
of
an Internet-based collaborative research project.

In particular, I have to thank the magnificent team of Senior Research
Editors (Reed Bowman, Tom Fuller, Jane Garry, John Henderson, Denise
Montgomery, Ted Nesbitt, Suzanne Watkins) and Research Editors (Daphne
Drewello, Jeffrey Graf, the late David Kresh, Dennis Lien, Barry Popik)
for splendid verification, research, and advice. They saved me from
many
errors, large and small.

More information about the book can be found at
http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/home.asp or www.amazon.com or
