Ah, this explains a long-standing mystery to me (not that I ever took
ten minutes to look into it). It was reported at Lizzie Borden's trial
in 1893 that the crowds outside sang the famous "Lizzie Borden took an
axe" ditty to the tune of "Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay!" I always wondered how
bad their sense of scansion must have been to sing those words to the
melody I know. But the posting reveals that there was a verse before
the chorus, and the axe ditty scans very nicely to the meter of that.
