I am assisting a friend of mine with a project, and hope that you
wombats can give me some guidance. My friend is an award-winning
elementary school teacher in a special education class in Appalachia,
and as often happens, the school department has cut her budget for
educational supplies, while expecting her to raise the test scores of
her students. Don't get me started. (And no, we are not asking
anyone on the list for donations!) She has some wonderful kids in
her class, most of whom are between 7 and 9 years old, and she is
trying to teach them about geography. Due to poverty, most of these
kids have never been out of their community, so she is turning to the
computer that recently got installed in her classroom. And here is
where you nice folks come in.

She has a dial-up connection and minimal time to search, plus by her
own admission, she isn't very internet-savvy, which is why she can
use some help. She is seeking interesting websites that would appeal
to kids-- she wants to show them different cities and states (and
countries if we have some international wombats) and what their major
tourist attractions are. The site doesn't have to have a lot of
printed information-- it just has to show what that particular city
or state (or country) is famous for. The kids are ultimately going
to make their own travel guides and collages, with tributes to each state.

I don't wanna clog up the list with responses, but if you know of any
kid-friendly and/or very visual sites from your city, could you send
me the URLs off-list? For example, being from Boston, I found them a
website with pictures of the Bunker Hill Monument and the USS
Constitution as well as the State House (very famous edifice, with a
golden dome-- designed by Charles Bullfinch). If your city or town
has some famous or scenic local sights that can be viewed online, let
me know. I'll pass the URLs along to my friend, and the kids will
get a nice geography lesson. Thanks everyone! :-)
