Sorry I don't mean to clutter the list but I am finding the discussion
interesting.

I wonder is Alaska's indifference is at all related to the larger
population and mix:

population Alaska 626,932? don't know just speculating. Meaning- do
larger centres tend to blur the lines? 

Little Nunavut on the otherhand  is primarily a First Nations
population of 29,500. When they became an official Canadian Territory in
1999  we were all glued to the TV watching the celebrations. It was very
emotional. They have what is called a 'consensus' government. They are
very proud people.

BTW The author Michael Kusugak is from Rankin Inlet in Nunavut.

Perhaps this is not an issue for the aboriginal/First Nations peoples
of Alaska, but it is and was of great importance for this segment of
Canadian First Nations peoples (see http://www.gov.nu.ca/Nunavut/).
