The lack of such dishes about the Mediterranean was probably due to the
scarcity of fish in the diet. Very little continental shelf
is associated with the Mediterranean, making fish hard to net and
expensive in early times and the catch unpredictable. Some believe the
fish sauce _garum_ was more valuable as a source of salt than as a
source of fish protein. Most of this information is verifiable in _The
Oxford Classical Dictionary_ under the headings of fishing and food and
drink.
