No answer for this, but I do not assume the question: Canadians pronounce the word [leftenant] and are on the same side of the Atlantic as our somewhat smaller (in area, if not in population) neighbour to the south, who pronounce it [lootenant]. Now if you were to substitute "the 49th parallel" for "the Atlantic" . . . I still wouldn't know the answer, unless the answer is "Just because."
