Kevin Phillips is being credited with coining the term
"petro-imperialism." Although it may be true that he has popularized the
term and made it mainstream with his use of it in AMERICAN THEOCRACY, a
google search reveals the term has been around for at least a few years
before its publication. Here's a Fred Shapiro-esque question: What is
the earliest use of the term? Was Kevin Phillips using the term before
American Theocracy was published? Answer would be helpful, be not
essential, for some research a politics professor is pursuing.

I don't find the term in JSTOR, Historical NYT or Wall Street Journal,
and there is no pre-Kevin Phillips use of the term that I can find in
Lexis-Nexis. The library's copy of American Theocracy is currently
unavailable, so I can't see what Kevin Phillips says about it himself.
