Here is a version I remember from church camp in Minnesota. Maybe your
patron and I went to the same camp. :-)
The Cuckoo Song
Ohhhhhhh..
I went to a flowing stream where the water's so good
And I heard there a cuckoo as she called from the wood
Ohhhhh li ahhhh
Oh li rah cakee
Ah oh li rah cakoo
Oh li rah cakee
Ah oh li rah cakoo
Oh li rah cakee
Ah oh li rah cakoo
Oh li rah cakee ah oh

Subject: [PW] ? Cuckoo song
Patron is trying to find words and music to a cuckoo song he knew 'years
ago'. We gave him the following two but he says: The refrain had a much
longer sequence that included the words "cukoo". Instead of "Oh di lay le
oh. Hoh di loh" it might be something like this:
Oh di lay, oh di lay hah hee yah, oh di lay cukoo cukoo
I also recall that the verses were more developed and descriptive of the
bird.
Appreciate suggestions if you know other cuckoo songs. Thanks!
A Young Austrian
A young Austrian went yodelling on the mountain so high When along came a
cuckoo bird, interrrupting his cry, yodel-ley-de Yodel-ley-de, Yodel-ley-de,
cuckoo, cuckoo Yodel-ley-de, Yodel-ley-de, cuckoo, cuckoo Yodel-ley-de-o
St.Bernard dog . . . Hahh, hahh (pant) Grizzly bear . . . Ahhh (fierce
noise) Milking cow . . . Schhh (milking sound) Pretty maid . . . Kiss, kiss
(kiss hand) Her mother . . . Ahh (scream) Her father . . . BANG!

1.. Sing "The Cuckoo's Song" in unison, adding the harmony if appropriate
for the students' age level. The language is an Alpine Austrian dialect of
German.
a.. 1.. Pronunciation:
Vehn dehr goo-goo-shrite, ahft ees lahng-ees-tsite.
Veerd dehr schnee fehr-gehn, veern dee vees-lahn green.
Translation: When the cuckoo calls, early springtime falls.
Oh di lay le oh. Hoh di lay lee lay lee oh All the snow will go, meadows
green will grow.
Oh di lay le oh. Hoh di loh
Oh di lay le oh. Hoh di lay lee lay lee oh Oh di lay le oh. Hoh di loh
1.. While singing, add a pat-clap-snap gesture to keep the triple meter
feeling.
2.. Accompany the song on guitar or Autoharp
