Having never noticed where the flush handles were
  located before, I decided to take note of their location
  on a weekend trip from which we returned yesterday.
  Guess what:  some are on the right, some are on the
  left, and in some public restrooms, there are buttons
  on the top of the tank.   In public restrooms that have
  the toilets backing into the wall and flush handles protruding
  from the wall, the handles can apparently be located
  anywhere, and they are. Left, right, or center.
  BTW, anyone who can sit on the potty while flushing
  with a handle located behind them must be very agile.

Think about it. When you're sitting on the john you aren't facing it; having 
the handle on the left allows you to flush with the right hand without 
turning completely around.
