Having never noticed where the flush handles were
located before, I decided to take note of their location
on a weekend trip from which we returned yesterday.
Guess what: some are on the right, some are on the
left, and in some public restrooms, there are buttons
on the top of the tank. In public restrooms that have
the toilets backing into the wall and flush handles protruding
from the wall, the handles can apparently be located
anywhere, and they are. Left, right, or center.
BTW, anyone who can sit on the potty while flushing
with a handle located behind them must be very agile.

That seems a bit strange because most people are right handed and
instinctively you'd be more likely to go to the right.
Perhaps Thomas Crapper's agent in America was left handed ;-)

Think about it. When you're sitting on the john you aren't facing it; having
the handle on the left allows you to flush with the right hand without
turning completely around.
