I'm left-handed so this has never been a problem for me and I never even
thought about it.

Perhaps the handle was placed on the left because of the left hand in
"olden times" was used for more "ignoble" purposes such as dealing with
toileting activity in general.  Don't know if this is the reason why but
it could be.
The word "sinister" and its foreign language equivalents in Romance
languages such as Italian, is associated with "left".  Until relatively
recently, left-handed children were forced to switch to their right hand
because being left-handed was somehow thought of as being evil.

That seems a bit strange because most people are right handed and 
instinctively you'd be more likely to go to the right.
Perhaps Thomas Crapper's agent in America was left handed ;-)

Sorry, I didn't mention that in the US the flush is usually on the left
as you face the toilet.
