Very often if you take the lid off the cistern you can reverse the whole caboodle so the lever would be on the left if that suited your home ... If the plumber is right-handed he probably sets it up with the lever on the right.

I suppose that one would first have to ask which side they usually are in
the US.
I have completely forgotten although I once lived there.
Public loos have a variety of flushes including buttons on the top and even
some where you just wave your hand in front of a button without having to
press it.
Rapidly thinking about my own and those belonging to family and friends, I'd
say that the flush handle is usually on the right. That's right as you face
the loo, not as when you are enthroned.
The chain type is very rare nowadays because people got rid of them.
This is a great pity because now they have become sought after as "original
features" and can increase the value of your house.
It just shows that you should never throw anything away.
I have just had a look at http://www.bathroomcity.co.uk/bathroomsuites.asp
and the vast majority of the bathrooms have loos with buttons on the top
The only one with a handle has it on the right.
