I've just seen this little snippet in
"A dictionary of English folklore", by Jacqueline Simpson and Steve Roud,
Oxford University Press 2000
"....his importance in Western Europe increased after a reported vision of
him during the siege of Antioch in the First Crusade was taken as a sign of
victory.
A military and aristocratic cult rapidly developed....."

Subject: [PW] St George & The Dragon & Patronage
Hi
I've just come back from a holiday in Prague (beautiful city!) and
find yet another crowd with a devotion to St. George.
Even more than most apostles, he seems popular in lots of places -
England, the Ukraine, Bohemia - the list goes on.
Does anyone know why this excessive popularity ?
Thanks
Eoin
