And getting back to the question, a bit, somewhat: There is much
written about St George at the Catholic Encyclopaedia,
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06453a.htm. However, the first
sentence sums up all the we know about the historical person: "Martyr,
patron of England, suffered at or near Lydda, also known as Diospolis,
in Palestine, probably before the time of Constantine". The rest of
the article is about what he was not.
Wkipedia also has an interesting article about his cult.
