This is similar to someone in the Spanish-speaking world who formally 
agrees to be a co-parent in the event something happens to the real 
ones and to be involved in the children's lives regardless: comadre or 
compadre, as the case may be. Of course the term has come to be applied 
loosely too in the sense of one's bosom friend as well.

Now the reason frijoles refritos are never refried beans is...
