Sigmund Spaeth's _Read 'em and Weep_ (Doubleday, Page, 1927) credits 
William B. Gray as the song's publisher (with a copyright of 1898) but 
does not go so far as to say that he wrote it himself, although it talks 
about other songs Gray wrote.
