Allen,

Could the word be "fatiloquist?"  That would be (according to the OED)
someone who declares or foretells the fates or future.

As to the second, I am only guessing, but there is such a thing as an
ammonia refrigerator that work without electricity,  much like an
ice-cream maker.  Perhaps these were extant in 1885.
