Thanks for taking the time to reply. I did know that the time was during
reconstruction, and yes the book is in chronological order. Still having
trouble finding the first reference, however. Guess it will just take some
patience and more focused looking.

Looks like it would be in 1868 or a bit later. If the novel is in
chronological order, that would narrow it down considerably.
