[PW] children's story

I'm a librarian, so I've tried every avenue I know....

In the 1950's I was read a children's chapter book about a young Catholic girl named Elspeth, or Elsbeth, perhaps Lizpeth?   It told of her many trials, particularly being a poor girl.

The story was read to us by our teacher, so I never knew the author or even the title.
