Negative evidence: I also draw a blank on WorldCat, RLIN, the
World Biographical Index from Saur (online version), and
INDEX BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHICUS NOTARUM HOMINEM (print tool). I
also searched several possible spelling variants including
just "noville" and "de noville" (and "du noville" and so on
and on...). The WBI lets one play all sorts of limiter games,
so I tried matching any one with "Jean Baptiste" or just
"Baptiste" as part of their name who was also coded as a
"mathematician" or "navigational writer" as occupation;
still nothing.
Good it be a pseudonym ("John the Baptist of No Town"??),
with his book (if it does/did exist) published under
his real name instead (or vice versa)? For that
matter, even if he wrote such a book, do we know that
it was publsihed?
There was an 1808 TRAITE DE NAVIGATION by a J.B.E. duBourguet,
which you probably found, and the "J.B." part of the
name is suggestive, but it's probably too late a
publication in any event.
