Yes, Yiddish is based on 14th (or is it 15th?) century low German, mixed in 
with Lithuanian and Russian expressions and written with Hebrew letters, 
which does mean it goes right to left.  I grew up in a Yiddish speaking 
home, but never learnt to write it.  Btw, if Robin can find a chapter of 
the Workmen's Circle/Arbeiter Ring (the home office is in NYC), they could 
certainly translate the letter for you.
