[PW] british children's author "Alex ____" ("Bricha, Brica, something?"

Hello all,

I'm trying to remember the name of a children's book author and illustrator, "Alex ____"; I cannot remember the name of any of his books, but each book did include, somewhere on every page, a large black pair of spectacles.  The books were aimed at beginning readers and were quite simply written but just wonderful.  Perhaps his surname is Slavic?  I'm sorry that I don't have more. Thank you, John
