[PW] Stumper: Celibate Native American

Dear P-W:

I am asking this on behalf of a colleague (my boss, actually), so let's 
wow him:

A client was doing extensive reading about Native Americans a few years 
ago, and remembers reading about a particular chief (or warrior) who 
made a vow to give up sex until his people were free ( or until some 
other desired milestone was reached). It was a specific individual, and 
not just "a Cheyenne chief" or the like.

Can anybody help us out? Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
