The original story is in _The Book of Fantasy_, Edited by Jorge Luís 
Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo.

A Woman Alone with Her Soul by Thomas Bailey Aldrich.

I no longer have that book, unfortunately.

I recall Dennis Lien saying the bibliographical information was a bit wrong.
