No, as far as I can tell, it's by our old pal Anonymous, certainly not by Ernie.

In the classic version, it's "sat" not "was" and "on the door" not "at
the door."


Shorter yet:

The last man in the world sat alone in a room. There was a lock on the door.


And for sf fans (PLEASE don't call it "sci-fi"):

The last fan in the world sat alon in a room. There was a LoC on the door.
