When I was in school in the late 70's, the ability to
talk about language was called *metalinguistics* in
the courses I took.  Looking for a definition of
metalinguistics online recently, I found  identical
meaningless definitions from several sources. 
However, I want to suggest the idea that "talk about
talk" might be found in the category of linguistics.
