This is for me, so there is no rush:

I am addicted to the BBC series "As time goes by".  In fact, my husband bought me the entire series (about 35 hours of viewing!) as a birthday gift and we are slowly going through each episode--even though we've seen every episode many times on PBS and/or BBCA..

One of the story lines involves a proposed miniseries for American TV.  The initial episode is a big flop and it is thought that no additional money will be earned.  However, it is then noted that when the contract was written, a "transmission fee" was included, so that the writer will earn quite a bit of money.

I am just curious as to what this means.  I tried searching Google, but cannot understand what I find.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
