A mumper is defined (Hist. Dict. of Am. Slang, c. 1997) as "a beggar." It
dates from the latter half of the 17th century. One of the several
quotations is from Washington Irving (Salmagundi, 1807): "Mumpers,
ragamuffins, bravoes and beggars." It's usage is given as "obs."
