You can immediately rule out anybody in the business realm - traditionally
business was seen as a low status occupation and the Communist era did not
improve that status of course. Only in modern China has the respectability
of the business class improved.

Mrs Sun Yat-sen or Soong Ching-ling was probably the most admired woman of
that era because of her commitment to women's rights, China's independence,
and her marriage to Sun Yat-sen. She was seen as an independent force -
neither Communist nor Kuomintang - thus avoiding being tarred as a
politician. Her sisters of course because infamous because of their links
to the colonial powers and to corruption.

Other than her, I would expect some literary figure to fit the bill but
none come to mind.
