Embalming was not a common practice in England in the 16th and 17th centuries according to Julian Litten's 1991 book The English Way of Death: the Common Funeral Since 1450. However many people both in England and elsewhere believed it to be beneficial to their health to eat or drink material extracted from human corpses.
