The trouble with this solution is that when you want *lots* of bookmarks
(or any other printed item), bulk printing is still *much* cheaper than
paying to print things yourself.  The cost of paper and toner would
quickly run the OP's school district budget into the ground.

If all that was involved was the printing, binding, and manufacturing
costs, hardbacks would be a few dollars each and paperbacks a little less.
The rest goes to marketing, friction in the distribution channel, and
(at the very tail end) author's royalties.
