 I agree with Kevin that this is likely John Buie Sutherland.  The
1870 census for Detroit shows John B. Sutherland living at the corner of 10th and Woodbridge with a wife Rosetta and a house full of kids.
The 1880 census shows Rosetta divorced with the same house full of kids.  There is a helpful family tree on ancestry.com containing this
info:

John Buie Sutherland

Birth 30 AUG 1825 in Edinburgh,Midlothian Shire, Scotland Death 22 NOV 1894 in Harlan, Manistee Co., Michigan

Some of the family trees on ancestry.com for John Buie Sutherland feature an autographed photo.  If you have a sample of his handwriting from the patent, you might compare them to the signed photo for additional evidence he is your man.
