well, yes, I realize that I'm committing the biographical fallacy, but I somehow feel justified in doing it with Dickinson.

Two possible explanations for the apparent incongruity:

(1) She had a vivid imagination (helps if you're a poet).

(2) The house and door are metaphorical stand-ins for something else
in her life.
