My first professional job (in 1997) was to establish a library in an
international school which shared a facility with a Chinese public school.
This was in Tianjin Economic and Development Area, 2-1/2 hours SE of
Beijing. There was a huge public library in Tianjin city, with a
periodicals room which had dozens of magazines from China as well as other
countries, including the Utne Reader!! The library is six stories, with
millions of volumes. Chinese people are avid readers. The newspapers are
displayed in glass cases on the streets and people are always reading.
There was a goal in China at that time to establish thousands of public
libraries all over the country. Visit the following:

penditures_of.html gives a chart of library statistics from 2004
http://www.nlc.gov.cn/en/others/tushuguan.htm lists links to libraries'
websites all over China and Taiwan (public, research, school, other
libraries abroad)

Hope this helps!
