Elizabeth and Lisa,

I have not read "The Apple Stone" (previously suggested and most likely
answer for this question) but I suspect your reader may be combining
memories of "The Apple Stone" with E Nesbit's "Five Children and It" (or
its sequels) as I seem to remember that the Psammead was a great
burrower (as well as a rather pedantic granter of wishes) -

Patron may enjoy these books as well! Apologies for the late reply, I've
been on leave...

Original query... "Patron is looking for a book he read as a child (he
was born in 1961) in which four children find a golden stone, perhaps a
philosopher's stone, and things that they touch with it come to life.
He remembers a bird from a watercolour, a crusader knight, a
Quetzalcoatl, a Guy Fawkes figure, and a stone ball that rolled on its
own. It was set in England. It had black and white illustrations as
well. If they let go of the stone, it would burrow into the earth, he
thinks. I am not a public librarian and do not have access to much
beyond the web. Any ideas? Thanks so much. Please respond to me
"privately, as I am not a subscriber.
