I think you may be looking for the 2006 book "Not Buying It: my year
without shopping," by Judith Levine in which she chronicles a year of
buying only groceries (and those are more carefully considered),
medicines, and other necessities.

 Patron is looking for a fairly recent book by a couple that changed
their lifestyle and lived cheaply/simply (doing free stuff in New York).
They didn't have kids. It's not the LA couple that moved to the orchard
Live simply (book and PBS series). Appreciate if you might know this
