Here is an indirect way to an estimated number. Euromonitor reports that the estimated number of one-person households worldwide in 2006 was 202.6 million, representing 11.8 % of total households. From that, the math gives an estimated total number of households to be 1716.94 million households.

I'm looking for the total number of households in the world (by region),
and who knew it would so difficult to find? I've tried the UN, the OECD,
the international database of the US Census, and even the World Bank. It
was easy to find the total number of households in the US (thank you,
Dept. of Commerce!) but I'm not sure where I should go next to find
global numbers. I'm finding out that it's not really population data I'm
looking for, and I keep finding figures for the number of people that
make up a household per country instead of what I need.
Can anyone help?
TIA,
