I'd agree with the observation by Dayle Henshel and Wendy Miller that the L in the alleged "Latte" or "Lalte" looks like the S in "Son" so more likely it's Salte or Satte.

My suggestion, based on attempts at collecting family history from English the census on microfilm, is to look at the following census.  Since the child is under 10 in 1880, he will not be in the 1870 census, but might well still be living nearby in 1890.
