Allen, during the census-taker's weekly working hours, the informant
was probably the Czech-speaking mother (Anna P. Schutt). (Wouldn't the
Alsatian step-father be at work then too?) You might inquire whether Lalte is a
Czech nickname or pet name for Leo or Albert or Leo Albert that might
have made it into the rolls.

Hi John,
Thanks for this additional suggestion.
The Census street address for them was at 996 Sheriff, in Cleveland. And it
turns out that they both lived AND worked there, since the father's
gunsmithing business was also in the same building. There was also some confusion with
the other child "Aloes L." since it/he appears written over a prior name.
I haven't yet found someone proficient in Bohemian or Alsatian nicknames,
but "Lalte" or "Latte" could well be some family endearment for Albert or
Leo. But as such, it seems to be unique here as a boy's first name (at least in
the census listings).
Birth records for Cleveland do not begin in earnest until 1873, so we will
not likely find that in Ohio. 'Latte' was presumably born in 1871.
Allen
