I have no printed source for this, only my experience.  The phrase "send
in the clowns" is FROM the circus, and it means something dangerous has
happened, and there is a need to draw attention away from it, so "send in
the clowns".  THIS was the basis for the reference.  Source?  IT WAS IN
THE SCRIPT.  Or it was back in the day when I had a copy, because I was in
it.  And sang it.  Connie
