My WorldCat-Fu suggests these as among the likelier possibilities.
(Searching for "whales -- fiction" and limiting to "non-juvenile"
(allegedly) and books and English language and years 1970-1990, and
knocking out Melville as author.

I also skipped a couple of titles like Bass' THE GODWHALE that I knew
to be clearly science fiction (since I imagine you'd have noted any
strong fantastika elements), and of course the "1970" starting date
was just an arbitrary guess.

If none of these hit the mark, I can try expanding my strategy.
