Phyllis Bratton asked me to post this on her behalf:
Hi, Daphne –
The answer to the question about the book with the man’s name in the title is Anthony Adverse, but the filter won’t let me answer it for some reason. Could you post it?

Subject: [PW] stumper: novel where man chopping tree, hits stone, dies?
I have a patron looking for a book she read “about 60 years ago”: the title is the man’s name so two words – main protagonist is French or Italian (or otherwise European) – of a richer, upper class background – died when he was chopping down a tree and his ax hit a stone embedded in the trunk(?!)..
Thanks for any leads!
