The book A Dictionary of Catch Phrases by Eric Partridge quotes an
obituary in the Daily Telegraph, 28 Aug. 1978, by Guy Rais: ‘He
insisted that he never said the line ... “The line was entirely the
creation of a press agent, and it has plagued me ever since I can
remember”, he said.'
Apparently the obit, or at least that quote, was picked up by other papers:
